The Tamarin Salt Pans are amongst the oldest salt farms in Mauritius dating back to the 18th century. Set at the foot of the La Tourelle mountain, they are located at the entrance of the village of Tamarin, in the Southwest of the island.

Salt was a vital commodity during the French period, especially for the preservation of meat on-board of ships and has become an important part of the history and culture of Mauritius. Sadly, The Tamarin Salt Pans are the last place in Mauritius where sea salt is harvested in a traditional and artisanal way, and that, in a close cooperation with the families of the surrounding villages.

The pans and storerooms are made from volcanic pavers and all handcrafted. Discover how seawater evaporates into salt crystals and witness a century-old traditional method for harvesting it.

The saltpans operate all year round and harvests are subject to weather conditions.

  • See how salt is harvested from sea water
While it doesn't look like much (just pools with salt and water) it is quite interesting to have a tour around the salt pans in Tamarin. The tour is really good with loads of information about the history but also how they actually get the salt out of the sea water. We didn't know for instance that when it rains the salt turns brown an can only be used in agriculture.

  • very interesting
This was very interesting ... These salt pans are over 100 years old, very informative, they show you the production technic , the scenery around the salt pans are beautiful. they do have a nice little souvenir shop as well with their flavoured and natural salts.
