Scenic South of Mauritius Tour
Famous for its nature reserves and breathtaking landscapes, this tour takes you on a scenic outing to explore the magnificent southern region of Mauritius and visit several of its main sights and places of interest.
The tour starts with a visit to the sacred Grand Bassin Lake situated deep in the heart of the island. About 1800 feet above sea level, this lake that rests in the crater of an extinct volcano is a place of pilgrimage for Mauritians of the Hindu faith. Besides Grand Bassin, you will also get to enjoy the statue of Lord Shiva. The statue is about 108 feet and is the highest known statue in Mauritius.
The tour continues to the Alexandra Falls which is part of the Black River Gorges Nature Reserve. Being one of the most popular sites of Mauritius with its untouched waterfall and its stunning viewpoint overlooking the Southeast region of the island, you will get to enjoy a unique experience with nature.
The next stop is at the Black River Gorges National Park, a protected reserve that is home to many of Mauritius native species of plants and endangered birds such as the Mauritius Kestrel, the Echo Parakeet, and the Pink Pigeon. Sights of wild boar, giant fruit bats, macaque monkeys and deer are not uncommon. The park is under the preservation and conservation programme of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.
You will then enjoy the dramatic coastal scenery from the Macondé Rock located between Baie du Cap and Le Morne. Set on a curved portion of the coastal road, on the peak of a small rocky cliff, this prominent landmark offers stunning views of a reef-free stretch of the Indian Ocean coastline. In 2015, Macondé had been classified as one of the most beautiful roads in the world as per the French guidebook “Le petit futé”, next to Route 66 in the United States and Karakoram, the highest asphalted road in the world in Pakistan, among others.
The last two stops are at the Gris Gris cliffs, symbolic of the southern coast of the island and well known for its black lava cliff coastline and rough seas. To end the day, you will visit the Vortex of Riambel, a place known for its regenerative energy and strong vibrations for those looking for serenity, peace of mind or spiritual and physical healing.
